As our Black Crown customers have discovered for over three years now, the piano artistry of veteran entertainer Larry Wegner is as professional as it gets. Variety is key to his popularity and a set might include jazz, blues, boogie, ragtime, light classic and latin styles — often within the same song. And there is almost always a twisted sense of musical humor lurking within his performances.
Talented in every sense of the word, Wegner has played in concert, performed in nightclubs and hotels, theatre venues, private events and even on flatbed trucks in parades. From the Brown Palace hotel to Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret to the Black Crown, Larry is a Denver favorite.
His talents as a writer (Out Front Colorado columnist for over 20 years) and visual artist (his paintings available at Old South Gallery on South Pearl) only add to the sensitivity and creativity with which he caresses, toys with and attacks the keys — which is almost always all 88 of them.
You can enjoy Larry weekly as he joyfully kicks off our weekends, performing every Friday from 5:30-8:30 pm.
Whether they’re rocking an R&B set for a dancing crowd at El Chapultepec or enthralling audiences with sensitive renditions of jazz classics at the Black Crown, The Old Souls can always be counted on to bring a healthy dose of magic to any room they play. Consisting of Danette Hallowell on vocals and Mikey Smith on keyboards (and often with special guests), The Old Souls have been honing their musical chops together for over 10 years. Their shows consistently attract large numbers of followers who are never less than enchanted by Danette’s soulful, powerful gospel-infused voice and Mikey’s expertful and energetic performances on the keyboards. Together they always create what can only be described as musical magic. Come see for yourself at the Old Souls’ next live performance!
Zachary, a Colorado native, has been performing piano for almost two decades, a student of Kim Joyce of Fort Collins and Andrew Cooperstock of the University of Colorado at Boulder. While music will always remain his first passion, Zac has also worked as an English teacher in France, a music and French tutor, and a bartender. He is a recent law school graduate of DU’s Sturm College of Law. His favorite composers are all classical (Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin), but he also has a flair for blues, contemporary, and pop styles. He is delighted to call Denver home and bring his music to the Black Crown each Sunday for “Champagne Piano Brunch”.
The John Hayden Sunday Jam Session @ Black Crown is a an open microphone to all singers and musicians who would like to participate. Hosted by John on Piano and various local favorites on bass. This is a really fun late Sunday afternoon event. Sserving Small plates menu and generous pours of the great bar selections of wine and spirits.
